With a name that means ‘little lion’ in Mandarin, there can be few dogs more aptly named than the Shih Tzu. As well as their magnificent mane of long lustrous locks, they also have a proud, almost regal-like bearing that befits their origins as the pets of Chinese emperors. But the similarity ends there. Bred to be companion animals, Shih Tzus are gentle house dogs who form strong attachments to their owners. Rather than a palace, all they really need is a loving home.

German Shepherd

The German Shepherd has a semi-long, well laid-back coat. Their colors can vary greatly from black with brown, golden, yellowish and grayish markings. A trademark of this breed consists of the black coat that covers the animal’s back, as if it were a cape, so they are also known as Black Cape German Shepherd in Brazil. They shed a lot and throughout the year, so daily brushing is essential to remove dead hair. A vacuum cleaner around the house will also be very welcome. When it comes to shedding, German Shepherds do shed a lot especially during autumn season and “blows’ their hair at least once. There is no magic solution to solve this problem apart from regular brushing. Also, if you bathe these dogs too much, it can strip of the natural oil off from their skin. So owners need not bath their German Shepherd unless it is really required.

Bulldog

Labrador

The Labrador has two layers of coat that helps in regulating their body temperature. One is the top layered coat called Guard Coat, which is a bit wiry and abrasive. Underneath it, is a softer and lighter coat called undercoat, that keeps them warm during the winters. Regarding the colour of their coat, Labrador is most commonly seen in golden colour, though there are also (and accepted) variations in black and chocolate. Even though labs have a short coat, they do shed a staggering amount of hair throughout the year. So you will have to take a fair bit of time from your schedule for their grooming. To reduce the problem of shedding, brush them at least once a week during off-season and twice a week during spring, when the hair fall is quite prominent. Also, give them a diet rich in Omega fatty acids, that strengthen their hair follicles, resulting in less shedding.
